Addison Public Library

The library is open today, Friday, June 19—Juneteenth.

We love this moment from last year: two little ones working on a paint-by-number activity in our Adult Services department.

A visitor stopped by and shared an original Addison Public Library card with us, and we had to show it off!

Before barcodes and computers, library cards looked a little different. A metal plate on the card was used to check out books using a special machine. Staff would place the card and the book’s card into the machine, and with a loud “ka-chunk!” sound, it stamped the patron’s ID number and the due date onto the book’s card.

This system was used in libraries starting in the 1930s and was part of everyday library life here in Addison until the 1980s, when we switched over to barcodes and an electronic catalog.

What a cool piece of library history!

Our first Trail Tale of the summer is up at Centennial Park (1776 W. Centennial Pl.) through July 5! Follow the path and read Lady Liberty’s Holiday by Jen Arena along the way.

We loved connecting and sharing ideas on how the library can support the Addison business community, including exciting opportunities in our new makerspace, Sam’s Lab.

Out of an abundance of caution, tonight's show will be cancelled. There is no date to reschedule. While the Village of Addison avoids cancelling shows whenever possible, holding them rain or shine, tonight's circumstances go beyond that. With multiple threats of severe weather being conveyed to us by the National Weather Service, including EF2 tornados, strings of severe thunder storms, and flooding, we do not want to risk putting any of you, any of our performers, or any of the wonderful people behind the scenes of the event in danger tonight. Stay safe, and stay inside. Thank you.

Today's visit to Panther Park will need to be rescheduled due to the weather. Hope to see you all on Friday at Byron Park!
