This afternoon, Arlington Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in the 2000 block of New York Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the roof of a one-story church and quickly upgraded the incident to a second alarm due to the size of the building. Church staff had safely evacuated all occupants prior to our arrival, and fire crews confirmed the building was clear.

The fire was brought under control approximately 15 minutes after firefighters arrived. Damage was limited to the roof area, and crews worked to protect property inside the church.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Last week, several Arlington Fire Department members attended the Tarrant County College Swift Water Rescue Technician course, further enhancing their ability to respond to water-related emergencies.

This comprehensive training included classroom instruction and hands-on exercises focused on identifying different types of swift water incidents and associated hazards, rescuer safety, scene size-up, site safety, shore-based operations, wading rescues, and boat-based rescue techniques.

Throughout the course, participants developed and refined critical skills including defensive swimming techniques, throw bag operations, tension diagonals, shore-based rescue systems, boat-based rescue systems, and boat-powered rescues.

Training like this helps ensure our personnel are prepared to respond safely and effectively when flooding and swift water emergencies occur in our community. We appreciate the dedication of these members as they continue to expand their knowledge and capabilities in service to Arlington residents and visitors.
