Happy Sickle Cell Awareness Day! Mayor James Shepherd signed a proclamation declaring today, June 19, 2026, as Sickle Cell Awareness Day in the City of Newnan, Georgia. This holiday was created to recognize those who live with sickle cell disease, a disease that affects the hemoglobin in red blood cells, which misshapes them into rigid forms that can cause blockages, which can cause infections and pain.

Happy Juneteenth! This state and federal holiday recognizes June 19, 1865, the date of the final order of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing enslaved peoples in the United States. While City offices are operating on a normal schedule today, we recognize Juneteenth as an important part of our nation’s history and the ongoing story of American freedom.
