This Juneteenth, we celebrate Black Americans' hard-fought freedom and resilience, reflect on our shared history, honor the sacrifices made, and renew our commitment to equality. City Hall will be closed in observance of this holiday.
Why We Celebrate:
On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced freedom by executive decree in what became known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day. Learn more about Juneteenth at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture's website nmaahc.si.edu/Juneteenth
📖 Stop by the Town Green for our StoryWalk®, featuring "Juneteenth for Mazie" by Floyd Cooper. Through Mazie's eyes, explore the history of Juneteenth, a story of strength and freedom passed down through generations.
Sanitation and recycling pickup will not be affected by the Juneteenth holiday. Yard waste pickup scheduled for Friday, June 19 will occur on Thursday, June 18.

We're having another Community Engagement Pop-up this Sunday at the Weekend Wind Down!
The City of Avondale Estates is embarking on an exciting, community-driven effort to shape what comes next for our downtown and for the city as a whole. Every five years, the City is required by the State to update the Comprehensive Plan and the Downtown Master Plan.
While two distinct plans will be developed, both share a common goal: creating a future that reflects the City's character, values, and aspirations.
This would not be possible without the help of our community. We want to hear from as many of you all as we can. Come chat with us and share your ideas this Sunday. We will have tents at the Town Green Plaza from 6 to 8 p.m. Come fill out our boards and take our survey, then go enjoy the free concert!
Can't make it this Sunday?
June 14 - Pop-up at the Farmers Market
June 29 - Hands-on Workshop at City Hall
