We're on a mission to end the cycle of homelessness for families.

Most people know that the first five years of a child's life are critical. But what most don’t know is that those early years are nothing short of magic. The brain develops at an astonishing rate, so much in fact, that nothing like it will ever occur again in that child’s life.

During early childhood, the brain is sensitive to everything happening around it. Stable, nurturing environments directly support healthy brain development.

When young children are exposed to prolonged stress, it affects their mood and behavior in the moment, and also changes how their brains develop, shaping their ability to pay attention, manage emotions, and learn.

Research found that among children ages three to five living in poverty and experiencing homelessness, more than half showed signs of disrupted development tied directly to the stress and instability in their lives.

But that gap is closeable with the right intervention at the right time. Our House’s Early Childhood Education program serves children from birth through age five. Through our federally funded Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we provide structured learning, developmental screenings, trauma-informed care, and the kind of deep family support that gives every child's brain what it needs during the years that matter most.

The magic of those early years belongs to every child, regardless of what is happening at home. At Our House, we are doing everything we can to protect it.

A lot of people in Metro Atlanta could qualify for free healthcare through Our House Health and not even realize it.

We serve men, women, and families who are uninsured with a low income, or who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. That includes more people than you think, including working adults who lost their insurance with a job change, families between coverage, seniors on fixed incomes, and parents stretched thin on bills who have been quietly putting off care.

Our House Health offers free medical visits, mental health support, preventive screenings, prescriptions, and more. No appointment is needed for most services, and there is no cost to anyone we serve.

If you or someone you know has been delaying care because of cost, visit ourhousega.org/healthcare to see if you qualify and to learn about hours of operation.

A small thing that can help more than many people realize: haircare products made for textured hair.

They rarely show up in standard donation drives, yet families often request them.
For our TogetherTuesday Housewarming Party, we’re collecting personal care items, including textured hair care products.

If you’re less familiar, consider popular brands like Shea Moisture, Cantu, Camille Rose, and The Doux.

You can drop off by appointment at 173 Boulevard NE, Atlanta, GA 30312, or shop our Amazon Wish List for direct delivery.

To coordinate, email Camille Watwood at [email protected].

We are excited to share an Our House guest column that was published in SaportaReport. The article uses the World Cup as a lens to highlight an important truth: while major events can leave a lasting impact on our city, the most meaningful legacy comes from investing in people and families. The piece showcases the work Our House does every day to help families move toward long term stability through housing, healthcare, early childhood education, and workforce development.

This recognition is a reflection of the incredible work of our staff, our donors, and our community. Every family served, every child supported, every challenge navigated, and every success celebrated contributes to the story being told about Our House and the impact we are making together.

Thank you for your dedication to our mission and for the care, compassion, and support you bring to our programs. Every donation - big, small, and in between - make what we do, possible.

True compassion means ensuring that working hard doesn't mean sacrificing your health. Across Georgia, 70% of the patients who visit free and charitable care clinics are employed - often working multiple jobs to make ends meet without access to healthcare coverage. Through the Georgia Charitable Care Network's safety net, of which we are a part, compassion heals. We help keep Georgia's workforce healthy, thriving, and out of the emergency room. Donate to our clinic today at ourhousega.org.

When most people picture people experiencing homelessness, they picture someone sleeping outside. But in Metro Atlanta, thousands of families are living a version of homelessness that is much harder to see.

A report released earlier this year by Georgia State University's Center on Health and Homelessness found that more than 4,600 adults and children in DeKalb County alone are living in motels and extended stay hotels as a last resort. Researchers found the actual number of families without stable housing is 25 times higher than what appeared in the county's most recent official assessment.

These families are spending $60 a night or more to sleep in rooms with broken locks, mold, and shared microwaves, essentially doing whatever it takes to keep their children sheltered.

Our House serves families at exactly this point of crisis, and connects them to shelter, healthcare, education, and the support it takes to find their way to stable housing. If you know a family in Metro Atlanta who is struggling to stay housed, share this post to encourage them to learn about available services and apply.

For a family transitioning out of homelessness, a single night in a shelter is not enough. Stability takes weeks and months of steady support, a real place to land, and the space to figure out what comes next.

Our House's shelter program was built to provide exactly that. Families stay for months in their own private living space, while working with our team on stable employment, savings, childcare, housing they can afford, and the skills to sustain it all after they leave.

Mothers, fathers, and children stay together throughout.
