PHGPM is a unique residency track that focuses on population and public health, setting it apart from other medical specialties. Training emphasizes preventive medicine, primary care, and conditions of public health significance.
During their time, resident physicians gained hands-on experience in local, state, and federal governmental public health settings across multiple programs, including:
• Environmental health
• Health promotion and disease prevention in communities
• Maternal and child health
• Community medical services
• Wellness clinics
• Infectious disease surveillance and reporting
• Emergency preparedness and services
Partnerships and experiences like these are how we build a healthcare workforce ready to meet Georgia's healthcare needs.

On April 17, the The University of Georgia School of Nursing was named the Victoria Kay Ivester School of Nursing. The announcement was a surprise to Kay herself, a tribute to a lifetime of caring for others.
As founding Dean Dr. Carolyn Clevenger said during the ceremony: "The school that will carry your name will be built on the same values that I understand you have lived by: care for others, presence in community and the belief that the people around you deserve the very best of what you have to give."
Under Dr. Clevenger's leadership, the Victoria Kay Ivester School of Nursing plans to welcome its first students as early as fall 2027. At a time when Georgia faces a critical nursing shortage, this investment matters deeply.
We're proud to recognize Dr. Clevenger's leadership and celebrate this landmark moment for nursing education in our state.

Shaping tomorrow's orthopaedic workforce starts with voices like Dr. James Barber's.
On May 13, 2026, Board member and immediate past Chair Dr. Barber took the stage at the The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) 2026 Summer Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he spoke on rural orthopaedics.
As an orthopaedic surgeon in Douglas, Georgia, Dr. Barber doesn't just speak about rural health, he lives it every day. His perspective on the challenges, rewards, and future of rural orthopaedic practice is shaped by real-world experience serving a community that depends on that care.
Last year, the American Orthopaedic Association sat down with Dr. Barber to explore how rural surgeons navigate an evolving healthcare landscape. It's a conversation worth hearing.
