Dr. Samantha Zwicker | The Secret Life of the Margay in Peru’s Rainforest • scipod.global Deep in the Amazon rainforest of southeastern Peru, one of the world's most elusive wild cats slips silently through the trees. Smaller than a jaguar and far less famous than a tiger, the margay is a master of the canopy, moving through tangled branches with extraordinary agility. For decades, scien...

Behind every camera trap checked, every enrichment built, every muddy trail walked, every data sheet completed, every late night discussion, every early morning boat ride, and every laugh around the dinner table…

there are interns. 🌿

Our immersive conservation internship is not “voluntourism.”
It’s long days, tropical heat, research, teamwork, adaptability, problem solving, and learning how conservation really works behind the scenes.

Over the years, interns have become an essential part of Hoja Nueva — contributing to wildlife research, rewilding efforts, camera trapping, environmental education, One Health initiatives, conservation logistics, and daily life at our field stations.

Many arrive as students.
Many leave as scientists, conservationists, veterinarians, advocates, lifelong friends… and family.

Thank you to every intern who has trusted us, worked alongside us, supported our mission, and left a piece of themselves in the jungle with us. ❤️‍🩹

Every step of rehabilitation matters — but some moments feel especially meaningful.

Diabla has officially moved into her pre-release enclosure:

the final stage before returning to the forest she was always meant to call home. 🌿

Animals like her get a second chance because of people who believe in this work.

Thank you for helping us change lives every single day — and for making moments like this possible. ❤️‍🩹

🇵🇪

Todo proceso tiene un punto clave.

Hoy, Diabla ya está en su jaula de preliberación,
un paso previo a volver a donde siempre perteneció.

Gracias por ser parte de es

We were all once kids who loved animals.

Now we’ve built our lives around protecting them.

Hoja Nueva is not one person — it’s a team.
A group of people who chose to do this work, every day, in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.

Together, we work across rewilding, wildlife rehabilitation, and research —
training the next generation through internships,
and applying conservation in real time alongside local communities through a One Health approach.

Everyone here plays a role in giving wildlife a second chance —
and in protecting the ecosystems they depend on.

And while this post highlights our full-time team, many others contribute to this mission along the way.

We’re proud to be a Peruvian-led organization, built by people who call this place home. 🌿

Rehabilitation starts with small steps. 🦝🌿

These early enrichments help young animals develop natural skills like exploring and foraging — essential for survival.

Each step brings them closer to life in the wild. ❤️‍🩹

Every small step matters!
