Today, the Broome County Urban League proudly commemorates Juneteenth—a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the enduring strength, resilience, and contributions of Black communities across our nation.
Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing work required to achieve equity, justice, and opportunity for all. As we honor this historic day, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering communities, advancing civil rights, and creating pathways to economic and social equality.
Let us continue to learn from our history, uplift one another, and work together toward a future where freedom and opportunity are truly accessible to everyone.
Happy Juneteenth!

Summer at BCUL is all about giving children a safe, supportive place to learn, explore, and enjoy being kids, which is why I’m excited to share that the 2026 Summer Enrichment Program will run July 6–August 14 at Calvin Coolidge Elementary School.
From arts and crafts to swimming, outdoor play, field trips, meals, and snacks, each day is designed to help children grow, connect, and have fun all summer long.
Have questions or want to learn if the program is a good fit for your family? Give us a call at 607-723-7303, we'd be happy to help.

We are outraged and deeply saddened by the brutal killing, by children, of an unhoused man in our community. This act of violence is not only tragic—it is a reflection of deeper systemic failures that continue to dehumanize and endanger our most vulnerable residents.
Being unhoused should never make someone a target. Every person deserves dignity, safety, and protection, regardless of their housing status. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for increased investment in homelessness prevention, mental health services, and community-based supports that protect lives and restore humanity.
At the same time, we must confront the growing need to engage and support our youth with meaningful opportunities, mentorship, and accountability. Violence is not created in isolation—it is shaped by the environments we allow to persist.
We cannot accept this as an isolated incident. It is a call to action. Our community must come together to demand change, invest in solutions, and ensure that no one is left vulnerable to such senseless violence again.
