Behind the Scenes: Preparing for HUD’s Continuum of Care Competition
HUD’s annual Continuum of Care (CoC) Notice of Funding Opportunity has officially been released, and before local agencies begin submitting project applications, One Roof is hard at work preparing our community’s competition process.
As the Collaborative Applicant for the Birmingham/Jefferson, Shelby, and St. Clair County CoC, our responsibilities include:
• Reviewing HUD’s funding notice and identifying new requirements and policy updates.
• Analyzing changes that may impact local housing and service providers.
• Developing a local competition timeline and application process.
• Updating ranking, review, and scoring tools
• Coordinating with CoC leadership and committees to ensure a fair and transparent competition.
• Preparing technical assistance and guidance for agencies applying for funding.
While much of this work happens behind the scenes, it is essential to ensuring our community can successfully compete for federal resources that support housing stability and homelessness response efforts throughout our region.
This is just the beginning of the annual CoC competition process, and we look forward to working alongside our partners in the months ahead.

Huge thank you to for donating 60 cases of water to support our community!
This passionate team is working every day to alleviate food insecurity, malnutrition, and food waste through the free distribution of donated food to feeding agencies across Birmingham. We are incredibly grateful for their generosity and partnership as we prepare for the warmer months and continue supporting our unhoused neighbors.

The need continues and so does the work.
Coordinated Entry is the community’s centralized system for connecting individuals and families experiencing homelessness to housing resources, ensuring access is fair, consistent, and streamlined.
By reducing barriers and aligning support services, it helps alleviate stress for both clients and providers while creating a more efficient path to housing.
If you’re looking for ways to support, stay engaged with us and our partners within the Continuum of Care that help strengthen the system.

We may have broken a record this year! 🎉
With more than 140 volunteers registered, this year’s Point-in-Time Count was truly a community-wide effort.
Point-in-Time is the one time each year our Continuum of Care comes together to count our unsheltered neighbors. The information collected serves two critical purposes:
1. It helps our community track progress toward ending homelessness.
2. It allows us to clearly demonstrate the need for increased federal resources to support our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
This work is not possible without collaboration. A project of this size requires dedicated partners, committed volunteers, and people willing to show up, even on one of the coldest days in January. We are incredibly grateful to every person who gave their time, energy, and compassion to make this count successful.
Additionally, Point-in-Time is one of One Roof’s largest annual initiatives, and it takes a true team to make it happen. Special thanks to our Community Engagement Coordinator Courtney and Katie our PIT Project Consultant, for helping lead and coordinate this massive effort alongside so many committed partners.
Enjoy a few photos of our teams heading out last Wednesday 💜
