In 2011, Senator Waggoner voted YES on SB310 β to repeal the Teacher Tenure Law and the Fair Dismissal Act. The vote was 18-16, decided by a single senator.
People hear "tenure" and imagine a guaranteed job for life. It wasn't that. It was due process β the right to know why, the right to respond, the right to be heard.
I've spent 16 years in Alabama public schools. Every professional deserves that basic fairness β teachers included.
When elected, I will vote to restore it.

Three months ago, the Alabama Legislature passed SB71. Sen. Waggoner voted YES.
The Cahaba River. Oak Mountain. Hunting land. Fishing spots. Drinking water.
The bill limits Alabama's ability to go beyond federal standards if we decide we want stronger protections for places we care about.
I believe Alabama should always have the freedom to protect Alabama.

In 2016, Birmingham voted to raise its own minimum wage to $10.10/hr.
The Alabama Legislature passed HB174 to stop it. Sen. Waggoner voted YES.
Whether you support a higher wage or not, here's the bigger question: should local communities have a voice in decisions that affect their own workers and families?
I believe communities deserve that voice.
On the last day of school, one of my students asked if I was running for office.
I told him yes β for State Senate.
He asked why I hadn't ever mentioned it in class, and I told him I don't discuss politics with my students because I believe that would be unethical.
He looked at me and said:
"Well, I'd vote for you if I could."
That one stuck with me.
After 16 years in the classroom, moments like that remind me why I'm running in the first place. Teaching has never been about politics. It has always been about showing up, doing the right thing, and trying to earn trust.
I hope to bring that same approach to Montgomery.
One of my coworkers apparently described me as "the guy who blows raspberries walking by the room." π
Fair enough.
I think people sometimes assume if you care deeply about schools, communities, and serious issues, you have to stop being yourself. I disagree.
You can care about Alabama's future and still laugh at dumb jokes, get excited about small things, and keep a little personality.
I'm still Spencer.

Today we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice made possible the freedoms we enjoy and the communities we call home.
As families gather across District 16 today β at cookouts, ball fields, churches, and around kitchen tables β I hope we all take a moment to remember those who never made it home.
Wishing everyone in District 16 a meaningful day of remembrance. πΊπΈ
Sundays are for family, church, baseball fields, yard work, and getting ready for another week.
One thing Iβve learned over the last few weeks is that District 16 cares deeply about where Alabama is headed. Even when people disagree with me, folks here care β and I respect that.
Iβm still doing what Iβve done for 16 years: listening, learning, and showing up.
If youβre new here, welcome. Have a good Sunday, District 16. βοΈ
My first bill, the Let Teachers Serve Act, fixes a 2010 law that forces any teacher elected to the Alabama Legislature to quit the classroom to serve. Senator Waggoner sponsored that law.
Here's what makes it an easy "yes": A-VOTE β the Alabama Education Association's own political action committee β has given Senator Waggoner $47,500, including $30,000 this year. The teachers' PAC is one of his biggest donors.
If the teachers' organization is willing to fund Senator Waggoner, surely Senator Waggoner can support a bill that simply lets a teacher serve.
A farmer can serve. A small business owner can serve. A lawyer can serve. Right now, only the teacher has to quit.
