The 8th Street Improvement Project is a community-focused effort to make the area between Main and Bannock Streets in downtown Boise safer, more vibrant, and accessible for everyone. Construction for the 8th Streets improvements started in May to allow for geothermal upgrades. Geothermal water is used to heat buildings in the colder months and can only be replaced when that utility is not in use.

On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed – folks who did not know they were free for more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

This important day commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and stands as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom, equality and justice. The City of Boise is proud to recognize Juneteenth as a city holiday, alongside the federal government’s recognition, and we honor the day by closing most city facilities.

As we approach our nation’s 250th birthday, Juneteenth invites additional reflection. It is not only a celebration of emancipation, but also a call to reflect on our shared history and the work still ahead of us, recognizing the sacrifices and resolve of so many to fiercely protect the dignity and worth of every person. We must each consider our own roles in the ways that we can continue to ensure that Boise is a place where all are welcome – where our neighbors have an equal voice and everyone has the opportunity to live and thrive in our community.
I hope you all take time today to remember what this day is all about. This is a day to celebrate emancipation and the vibrant contributions of Black Americans. It is also a day for us to recommit fostering a welcoming place for all people and cultures as we create a city for everyone.
