Happy Juneteenth! Today, we honor the day freedom was finally realized for the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, and celebrate the enduring pursuit of freedom. Today, we honor the generations who fought for liberty and recommit ourselves to strengthening the promise of freedom.

It was amazing to take part in the Cuts & Culture conversation at Maty & Suns Barbershop on Fulton Street, bringing together Brooklynites of all generations to discuss how we take care of one another. Grateful to , , and Project Unsilenced for teaming up with our office to make this happen.

Dr. Shneaqua “Coco” Stanley is a daughter of Bed-Stuy and we were so proud to have her in City Hall Chambers, getting the recognition she deserves with a proclamation. When she lost her sister to gun violence, that loss belonged to all of us in Bed-Stuy. And Coco transformed that loss into a lifelong mission to protect our neighbors and promote community healing.

Her life’s work is a testament to resilience, to forgiveness, and to transformative justice.

Thank you for everything you do, Coco, and thank you .

Bed-Stuy does not take our co-namings lightly. When we put someone’s name on a street, we are saying: this person is part of who we are. By naming this street after Dr. Frank Nathaniel Mickens, we are making a promise to remember where we came from and honor the people who got us here. From here on out, Stuyvesant Avenue and Fulton Street carry his name.
