This of our Geoffroy's marmosets scale training, comes from Senior Keeper Megan!

Keepers use positive reinforcement to scale-train the marmosets with fruit or nuts as a reward. By encouraging them to voluntarily hop onto a small scale, staff can regularly monitor their weight, which can be an important indicator of overall health. Additionally, this training helps reduce stress, supports routine wellness checks, and strengthens the trust between the marmosets and their care team.

Hamadryas baboons inhabit arid and rocky cliffs of countries in the Horn of Africa. In this throwback video of our Hamadryas baboons from last summer, we see some of the troop’s social dynamics at work. The youngest members engage in high-energy play under the watchful eyes of the adults. Through play and play-fight, young baboons develop their motor skills, agility, and strength. This behavior also helps them establish social bonds and learn to navigate the group’s hierarchies. We currently have 11 baboons at the Prospect Park Zoo. Visit them soon and see which behaviors you can identify.

Did you know cats have scent glands on their faces, tails, and feet? When they rub against people or objects, they’re leaving pheromones to mark them as their own.

Wild cats use this behavior to mark their territory, and at Prospect Park Zoo, enrichment encourages these natural behaviors.

“To encourage our sand cat brothers to scent-mark, we use everything from spices to perfume in their habitat,” says Senior Keeper Megan. “They’ll also mark items that another animal has scented—such as feathers or snakeskin—or new objects they’ve never seen before.”

As these photos show, when a new scent is introduced, the sand cats quickly get to work, robustly marking in response.

In this video, our Fly River turtle is being hand-fed a treat from his keeper—a banana! This species is very omnivorous, and its diet can include fruit. They’re one of the soft-shelled turtles, so named due to their lack of scutes, the hard outer plates found on most other turtles. They are semi-aquatic and have elongated snouts that allow them to breathe while remaining mostly submerged. Visit our Fly River turtle in the Hall of Animals.

Happy World Turtle Day! The Rote Island snake-necked turtle is native to Rote Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. It has not been seen in the wild there for more than a decade. This species is one of the 25 most threatened freshwater turtles in the world and is listed as “Critically Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Since 2015, the Bronx Zoo has shipped 46 turtles back to Indonesia in one of the first repatriation efforts of its kind. Prospect Park Zoo currently displays one of these turtles in the Hall of Animals.

🔊 Sound on for pudu eating crunchy vegetables ASMR! A typical breakfast for pudu at the Prospect Park Zoo consists of specialized grain pellets, yams, carrots, mixed greens, and apples. As one of the world's smallest deer species, pudus don't need a large quantity of food. They forage for leaves, shrubs, fruits, and other vegetation. Because they eat a wide variety of high-water-content plant matter, they can go for long periods without drinking water.
