To mark America’s 250th year, we invited notable Americans to select one transformative title from BPL's booklist and share why it still resonates today. Julian Shapiro-Barnum chose American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang.
Regarding his selection, Shapiro-Barnum shares:
"As a kid, it can be quite a challenge to understand being anyone but yourself. I remember reading American Born Chinese when I was 12, initially being sucked in by a slew of themes that felt incredibly relatable to me: the feeling of being othered, confusion about who you are, and the discomfort of growing up. However, once I got into it, the book was able to bring race into the conversation in a way that, at the time, was very new to me. It helped me see past myself. I think this book perfectly balances these very real subjects with whimsy, depth, and humor, making it such a treasured book to so many young readers. "
