Great sustainability work starts with collaboration.

Cary staff spent the day at NC State University for the North Carolina Composting Council’s annual meeting, connecting with industry professionals and learning about topics like soil health, contamination prevention, and community engagement.

We’re proud of our Cary Composts program and the role our community plays in making it a success. Together, we’re turning waste into a resource and building a more sustainable future. ♻️🌱

Any day is a good day to begin composting in Cary!🥕♻️

Our food waste drop-off sites accept a variety of material that cannot be composted in a backyard bin.

You can get started by collecting your food waste (including meat, bones, and many paper products) into a small container. Then, simply bring it to a drop-off site.

This free service helps to grow future gardens instead of landfills, and you can help do your part! For a list of sites and accepted items, visit carync.gov/foodwaste.

Yes! It’s a Copperhead! The Copperhead is the only venomous snake we need to worry about in Cary. This one, and several others we have seen this year, found his way into a garage where he surprised the residents. Snakes are generally lazy, but the search for food can send them exploring any place prey may be. As rodents and lizards are common around homes, snakes will be too. You can minimize the chance you will have a close encounter by sealing up holes animals may be able to use for access into homes and garages. Additionally, keep bird seed or other foods in animal proof containers, and remove debris and trim bushes close to the home to take away hiding spots. If you can eliminate habitat and food sources, our reptile friends may move along.

While Cary Animal Services does not respond to snakes outside, if we can help get a snake out of your garage or from inside your home, we will give it a try. Snakes are an important part of natural pest control. We just don’t want them in our house!
