Stormwater staff are ready to welcome you to one more Stormwater Open House this evening in Chapel Hill Public Library Room B (6p - 8p). We had a packed house and a lot of great conversations this afternoon!

Make sure to stay hydrated, rest, and find shade if you have to be outside today. You can also check on elderly loved ones or neighbors who are more susceptible to the heat.

Today, our community came together at Peace and Justice Plaza to honor the lives lost to gun violence and to stand in support of survivors and affected families.

As we mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we remember the lives lost and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safer community for everyone.

You may smell smoke in the coming days from a controlled burn at Brumley Nature Preserve in Orange County.

Update (5/21/2026 8:30am): The brush fire remains contained this morning. Hotspots continue to smolder, which means community members should expect smoky conditions to last for several days.

Please call 911 only if you observe fire outside of the burned area.

Update (5/20/2026 10:05pm): Fire crews on scene have fully contained the brush fire and Seawell School Road has reopened to traffic.

While this fire was initially dispatched to Chapel Hill Fire Rescue, crews determined it’s in the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department's jurisdiction, which means Carrboro Fire is the lead agency.

The N.C. Forest Service will remain on scene overnight.
