Have you seen the new art installation at ImaginOn?
Grey Packard and Maris McDonald, seniors from East Mecklenburg High School, were inspired to create this crochet mural advocating for the importance of diversity following the increased presence of border control agents in the Charlotte community in December of 2025. The students researched the top 60 countries from which people immigrate to the United States, and with the help of student artist Nora Rubin, designed the patterns for the background and the flag feathers. 100 patterns were sent out to nearly 40 crochet artists all over the country and after pieces were shipped in, they were sown together to create the final piece. The reveal was held on April 2nd, 2026 at Divine Barrel Brewing, Charlotte NC, before its residency at ImaginOn. This mural drew inspiration from Liberty Crochet Mural, originally created by Jen LaMastra, which Grey participated in in 2023.
