Mission PWO 2026 Delivers!!
Prosthetic Leg Outreach Trip Report
Location: Ibarra and Puerto Napo Ecuador,
Mission: Delivery and fitting of prosthetic legs
Outcome: Five individuals received prosthetic limbs and mobility training
Overview
The Penipe Foundation conducted a humanitarian outreach trip to rural Ecuador to deliver prosthetic legs to individuals who had previously lost lower limbs and lacked access to mobility devices.
During this mission, five prosthetic legs were delivered and fitted, restoring mobility and independence to recipients from underserved communities.
This effort was made possible through collaboration between The Penipe Foundation, prosthetic specialists, donors, and the support of community members.
Recipient Support and Fittings
Each recipient underwent:
• Prosthetic socket fitting
• Alignment adjustments
• Safety checks
• Basic walking training
The prosthetic devices were customized to ensure comfort, stability, and long-term usability.
Highlights from the Mission
Community-Based Fitting
Don Rolito and Edwin were fitted and trained, learning how to properly attach and adjust their prosthetic leg. This allows them to return to daily activities such as farming and walking independently.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
Gaby received a new prosthetic leg and began gait training using parallel bars. Pediatric prosthetics require special adjustments as children grow, and ongoing follow-up will ensure proper development and mobility.
Multi-Generational Impact
Another prosthetic recipients were Manuel and Angel Maria who had been living with limited mobility. Receiving a prosthetic limb restored their ability to move more freely and participate in family life.
Local Collaboration
Local technicians from “Protesis Imbabura” assisted with fittings and adjustments, ensuring the devices were properly aligned and comfortable.
Community Impact
The delivery of five prosthetic legs has immediate and long-term benefits:
• Increased independence and mobility
• Ability to work and support families
• Improved mental and emotional well-being
• Greater participation in community life
For many recipients, this was their first opportunity to walk with a prosthetic limb.
Challenges
Rural infrastructure and limited medical access remain major challenges in these communities. Transportation, follow-up care, and prosthetic maintenance require continued support.
Next Steps
The Penipe Foundation plans to:
• Conduct follow-up adjustments for recipients
• Expand prosthetic outreach to additional communities
• Provide rehabilitation training and maintenance support
• Identify additional patients in need of prosthetic care
Gratitude
The Penipe Foundation extends gratitude to donors, volunteers, medical staff, and local partners who made this mission possible. Their support directly changes lives by restoring mobility and dignity.
