June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, but protecting older adults is a priority for the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP) year-round.
In 2026, the number of abuse-related complaints received by the LTCOP is already on track to surpass last year's total, underscoring the ongoing need to protect vulnerable residents in long-term care facilities. Every complaint represents a person whose safety, dignity, and well-being may be at risk.
If you suspect an older adult in a long-term care facility is experiencing abuse, neglect, or exploitation, contact Adult Protective Services at 1-888-277-8366 and then call the LTCOP at (423) 591-7719. Speaking up can make a critical difference.

Request and use a My Health Care Tracker from the SMP and track what happens at appointments to then compare what you have written to what is billed on the Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) and/or Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
If you see something concerning, report it to the SMP.
