As we commemorate Juneteenth, we are reminded that freedom is more than the absence of oppression, it is the presence of opportunity, dignity, and justice for all. It is also a reminder that the law is not self-executing and that the rights we cherish must be protected and advanced by each generation.

Today, our fight for true freedom endures, though in different forms. We confront existential threats to civil rights, barriers to equal access to justice, and inequities that continue to impact our communities - even driven by institutions historically charged with preventing these very outcomes. The challenges may have changed, but our responsibility has not.

The Cook County Bar Association was founded on the belief that lawyers have both the power and the obligation to advance justice. That mission remains as urgent today as ever. As lawyers, judges, and advocates, we know that freedom requires vigilance, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

On this Juneteenth, let us recommit ourselves to defending justice, challenging inequity, zealously championing civil rights, and building a future where freedom is experienced fully and equally by all.

The struggle continues, but so does our resolve.

Happy Juneteenth,

The Cook County Bar Association Board of Directors

After issuing a statement in recognition of Pride Month, the Cook County Bar Association was proud to host the LGBTQ+ Justice Town Hall Forum on June 2 in collaboration with the Alliance of Illinois Judges, the LGBTQ+ Committee of the Chicago Bar Association, and Chicago's LGBTQ+ Bar Association at Hinshaw and Culbertson. This timely collaboration was designed to examine the current state of LGBTQ+ affairs and civil rights advocacy.

Thank you to our phenomenal panelists Commissioner Precious Brady-Davis, Alderman Lamont Robinson, Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs for the City of Chicago Antonio King, ACLU Illinois Senior Policy Counsel Aisha Davis, and Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Nathan Maxwell. We also sincerely thank our Moderator Marcell Taylor and Event Coordinators CCBA LGBTQ Section Chair Hon. Nisha Dotson and CCBA President Antonio Lee.
