I was honored to spend time this weekend at Speaker Welch’s Juneteenth Festival, celebrating the freedoms won and recommitting to the work still ahead. Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat with me!

Today, I think about all the sacrifices my father made for our family. From working in the Bracero program, to becoming a factory unionized worker in Chicago. Without his hard work and determination, I would not be the man I am.

This , I’m pleased to honor Ted Korbos, an admirable community leader and long-time resident of Berwyn. Ted is the co-founder and co-chair of the Berwyn United Neighborhood Gay and Le***an Organization, otherwise known as BUNGALO+. This organization has helped foster safe spaces of belonging and connection in Berwyn for LGBTQ+ residents through important community events including Berwyn’s annual Pride March. Ted and BUNGALO+’s commitment to combatting the social injustice and isolation that can affect the q***r community has been key to creating pathways for q***r empowerment and representation in Berwyn and beyond. Thank you, Ted, for uplifting our community through advocacy and visibility!

At a time when global humanitarian assistance programs have been cut by Trump’s dismantling of USAID, millions of refugees around the world are struggling to access food, shelter and other basic human needs.

We must do better. This World Refugee Day I’m committed to fighting for policies that uphold our shared humanity and support the tens of millions of people worldwide seeking safety.

Juneteenth isn’t just about remembering our history and celebrating the promise we’ve made, it’s a call to continue to work to advance equality and justice for all. Happy Juneteenth!
