Advancing locally led solutions to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste in more than 50 countries. We’re changing that.

The Global FoodBanking Network supports community-driven solutions to alleviate hunger in more than 40 countries. Türkiye, already home to one of the world’s largest refugee communities, is under increasing strain as more people are expected to seek safety at it's border with Iran.

For Lilas Jawish, the search for safety began more than six years ago when her family fled the civil war in Syria and settled in Istanbul. Now, she's a full-time dental school student and volunteers translation services.

Like many displaced families, they faced a mix of hope, uncertainty and daily challenges. That’s where organizations like GFN member TIDER step in.

Together with the Refugee Association, TIDER helped establish a grocery‑store‑like food bank in Sultanbeyli — a district where many refugee families live. Here, people can select the food and household items that best meet their needs, preserving dignity and choice.

“If there were no support from this association and the food bank, I would have to leave my [dental] school to support my family’s basic needs,” Jawish said.

In honor of International Refugees Day, continue reading Lilas' story on our blog.

This is a garden that keeps on giving. And it’s giving so much more than food.

Supported by GFN member FoodForward SA, this once headache of a plot at the Sinethemba community center is now a thriving circular support system:

- FoodForward SA provides seedlings, supplies and in-depth training

- Everyone who helps maintain the garden takes home fresh produce when it’s ready to harvest.

- The center uses some of the food to stock their community kitchen.

- If there’s excess food after the harvest, FoodForward SA buys it and takes it to their warehouse, and from there, they will make sure it gets to other community organizations that will put it to good use.

Just a few reasons why we love it when food banks and local governments work together. ⤵️

Thanks to a partnership between the Rosario Food Bank and the city government:

-14 people have full-time jobs recovering fresh produce from one of the city’s biggest agricultural markets.

-Over eight years, the food bank has recovered more than 1 million kilograms of fresh produce from this one market alone.
