Chicago PCG stands in solidarity with the forcibly displaced and stateless persons during World Refugee Day

Chicago, 22 June 2026 - The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joined the international community in honoring the forcibly displaced and stateless persons on World Refugee Day. The Blue Monday event included the reading of the National Refugee Day Message of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., followed by the playing of the National Refugee Day commemorative video.

This year’s observance coincides with two important milestones: the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 45th anniversary of the Philippines’ accession to the Convention. [END]

CHICAGO PCG PARTICIPATES IN PIWC GALA NIGHT CELEBRATING THE 128TH ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

ROSEMONT, ILLINOIS, 21 June 2026 – Consuls Melvin Almonguera and Ella Karina Mitra represented Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano at the annual Gala Night of the Philippine Independence Week Committee (PIWC) held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois on 21 June 2026.

On behalf of the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, Consul Almonguera delivered remarks highlighting the significance of the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and the 80th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the United States. He underscored the important role played by generations of Filipino Americans in strengthening the enduring friendship between the two countries and commended the PIWC for preserving a cherished tradition that fosters unity and pride among Filipinos in the Midwest.

Meanwhile, Consul Mitra presented Plaques of Recognition from the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago to PIWC Overall Chairman Reynel Espiritu and PIWC Board of Trustees President Mercy Matousek in recognition of their invaluable contributions and steadfast leadership in promoting Philippine culture and strengthening the Filipino American community in the Midwest.

Attended by approximately 1,000 guests, this year's Gala Night featured various cultural performances, a traditional rigodon dance, and the parade of PIWC beauty queens. The Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker was Mr. Aaron Del Mar, candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois and a proud Filipino American.

For decades, the PIWC Gala Night has been one of the largest and most anticipated celebrations of Philippine Independence in the Midwest, bringing together Filipinos and friends of the Philippines in a vibrant display of heritage, unity, and community spirit. END

CHICAGO PCG JOINS THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 165th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. JOSE RIZAL

The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, represented by Consul Ma. Theresa M. Alders, Consul Ella Karina R. Mitra, Cultural Officer Mary Joy Duran-Mortel and Protocol Officer Martyn Asker B. Orcine, joined the commemoration of the 165th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal hosted by the Knights of Rizal on 20 June 2026 held at Margate Park in Chicago, Illinois.

The ceremony commenced with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem followed by a flower offertory led by Consul Ella Karina Mitra, accompanied by members of the Knights of Rizal (KoR), Ladies for Rizal, and representatives from various Filipino community organizations.

Chicago Area Knights of Rizal Commander Mariano "Anong" Santos welcomed attendees with a brief history of the installation of the monument dedicated to Dr. Rizal, emphasizing his significance in Filipino identity and history in Chicago and the US.

Consul Ma. Theresa Alders delivered remarks on behalf of the Philippine Consulate General, emphasizing that the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal lives on in every Filipino and underscoring his continuing relevance in modern society. She highlighted how Rizal’s ideals and values continue to inspire Filipinos.
The event also featured remarks from representatives of various organizations, including Reynal Espiritu of Philippine Independence Week Committee (PIWC) and KoR, Angeles Carangang of National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), Dr. Evelyn Natividad of PACF, Ms. Nerissa Allegretti of Ladies for Rizal and National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NaFCon), Dr. Virgilio Jonson of KoR, Mr. Ed Brotonel of KoR Chapter Commander Chicago, and Mr. Felix Gonzales of KoR.

The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago joins the nation in celebrating the 48th National Disability Rights (NDR) Week.

This year’s theme, “Rights First, Legislation Forward - Strategic Action for Equal Participation and Inclusive Development,” anchors the week-long celebration in two clear pillars: strategic direction (long-term road map, system reform, right-based governance) and legislative advancements (new laws, amendments, enforcement, closing gaps), aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and national development goals.

HIMAP CHAIRMAN PAYS COURTESY CALL ON CONSUL GENERAL

Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano received Mr. Vincent Remo, Chairman of the Healthcare Information Management Association of the Philippines (HIMAP), at the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago on 17 June 2026. She was joined by Consul Melvin Almonguera.

During the meeting, Mr. Remo discussed recent developments in the PHL’s healthcare information management services (HIMS) industry and opportunities to strengthen engagement with stakeholders in the U.S. Midwest. Representatives from ADEC Innovations, a PHL-founded multinational company, also joined the meeting and shared perspectives on workforce development, including the opportunities and challenges arising from the adoption of artificial intelligence.

The Consul General highlighted the HIMS sector's role in driving the country’s digital economy, creating high-value jobs for Filipinos, and strengthening PHL-U.S. economic cooperation. Both sides exchanged views on potential avenues for collaboration to promote greater awareness of the country’s capabilities in healthcare information management.

Established in 2003, the HIMAP (www.himap.ph) is the principal industry association promoting the PHL as a preferred global destination for healthcare IT-BPM services. END
