“Whether current U.S. policies will enhance or impair the position of the United States in the global marketplace for skilled workers is an open question.” Kelli Hayes, in “H-1B Visa in Transition: Recent Federal Developments and Practical Implications,” breaks down the the H-1B visa from its introduction in 1952 to contemporary and ongoing reform efforts, particularly those of the current administration. We thank Kelli for her insights into a contentious, important area of immigration law.

"From the earliest naturalization requirements to contemporary security concerns, each legislative milestone reflects the nation's evolving identity and challenges," writes Robert H. Cohen in "The Evolution of U.S. Immigration Laws: A Historical Overview." From the Naturalization Act of 1790 through to the USA PATRIOT Act, Robert guides us through the history of American immigration law. He emphasizes how ever-changing economic, political, ideological, and social realities were reflected in the country's immigration policy throughout its complex and storied relationship with its immigrants. We thank Robert for his detailed chronology, and for reminding us that "understanding this history is crucial to understand the tension and controversies of immigration policy."

"It's a systemic problem and one that we must confront as a profession." In "Six Ways Lawyers Can Set Boundaries and Why They Are Essential for a Healthy Legal Career," Scott R. Mote encourages legal professionals to take steps to ameliorate the often-overwhelming nature of the profession. Proactively setting boundaries helps separate the person from the profession, which is vital for maintaining health and ability. For Scott, setting boundaries is "one of the most courageous, responsible things a lawyer can do" because "boundaries are for the hard-working, high-achieving, heart-in-the-right-place lawyer who wants to keep doing this work without losing yourself along the way."
