The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display onsite. Awardees are announced annually in April, the Month of the Military Child. Tonight, we salute Private First Class Barry Kent Weaver from Solon, Ohio, who tragically lost his life from small arms fire on June 19, 1970, in Gia Dinh province, Cambodia.

Ohio veterans with low incomes who are permanently and totally disabled or are age 65 and above may be eligible for pension support. Payments are made to bring the total income, including other retirement or Social Security, to a level set by Congress. We recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans, including the generations who served in our Armed Forces and continue to serve our country and communities. Each day at sunset, as part of the ODVS Ohio Taps Project, we pay tribute to an Ohioan who died while serving our country.

Tonight, we salute Sergeant John Morehead Scott, who was one of 24 men (including two civilians) who penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. He was captured and executed on June 18, 1862, in Atlanta. For his role with the Andrew’s Raiders, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Tonight, we salute Elyria Army Specialist Jason N. Cox died June 16, 2008, in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained near Hillah when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame was created in 1992 to recognize the post-military efforts of outstanding Ohioans who contribute to their communities through volunteerism, advocacy, professional distinction, public service, and philanthropy. Each year, the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame Executive Committee, made up of representatives from Ohio’s veterans organizations, selects up to 20 Hall of Fame honorees from a large group of nominees. More than 900 have been inducted over the last 30 years including Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Katherine Sullivan, Ulysses S. Grant, Eddie Rickenbacker, Charles Young, Clark Gable, Paul Newman, Bob Evans, Dr. Henry Heimlich, Bob Feller, Paul Brown, and Woody Hayes.
