Never, ever underestimate Ohio women.
Emma “Grandma” Gatewood was born in Mercerville in 1887. In the 1950’s, the mother of 11 decided she would be the first woman to solo thru-hike the .
During a failed attempt in 1953, rangers found Gatewood lost on the trial and scolded, “Go home, Grandma!” Determined to complete her mission, she set back out on the trail. After five grueling months on the trail, Gatewood accomplished her goal on September 25, 1955 at 67 years old. She returned two years later to do it all again and became the first person to hike the full trail twice.
