Happy Juneteenth from FCPL!

Today marks 161 years since June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863.

Explore the history of this holiday through lyrical text and dynamic artwork in “They Built Me for Freedom: The Story of Juneteenth and Houston's Emancipation Park,” written by Tonya Duncan Ellis and illustrated by Jenin Mohammed.

We had an incredible time last week at the first stop of Where’s Loanie: A Bookmobile Scavenger Hunt!

Everyone who solved the clues and met us at Lanierland Park enjoyed horse-themed activities, crafts, and an Appalachian storytime, along with a wonderful visit from the miniature horses of Whittle Hooves. It was an amazing start, officially breaking our all-time attendance record since "Where’s Loanie" began three years ago!

🔍 Ready to join the fun? Here is Clue #2 for this week:

Loanie brought the books for this history lesson. When the bell rings, class is in session!
