Constables deal with some of the ugliest situations involving evictions. Having to remove someone from what they consider their home is dangerous. Most folks are not aware of what constables do, and quite often, they are not paid or equipped like other law enforcement in their county.

In this Pulitzer -worthy 2023 photo by Joanna Palomo you see the scene in Salinas, CA, when a Monterey County deputy was evacuated after being shot while serving eviction papers.
He survived.

You can also see a pretty concrete illustration that may explain why rural officers have such an unexpectedly high fatality rate when they get shot.
In one of the state's (many) remote counties, a deputy might have had backup on the enforcement, but he'd almost certainly be alone when he served initial eviction process.
Boone was, many many times.

Backup isn't just company, it's someone to apply pressure or a tourniquet, someone to pick you up and run, someone to cover your six.

It's a chance at a second chance.
I'm grateful this deputy had that chance. My wish for him is a complete recovery with the full support of his agency and community.
My wish for you is that someday you have what you need to have a chance at a second chance, too.

FACT!! Stay safe!

I'm in my 8th year of tracking officers shot broken down by population where they fell.
So far this year, the numbers of officers wounded or killed by felonious gunfire in the places I write about- rural places, remote ones, small towns- are trending according to the pattern established since I began: about 30% of the total but a disproportionate fraction of the fatalities.

In 2024 the percentage of officers shot and killed in all places

Eviction are some of the worst situations. The constables in Navarro County doing almost all evictions by themselves. Prayers for those involved in this situation.

MS- Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Jimerson, 61, was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call. He was able to return fire and the suspect is dead.
Deputy Jimerson began his service as a volunteer reserve in 2010, and in 2014 became a paid part-time deputy while continuing his day job. He was widely respected and known for his dedication and humor.
He was a son, a brother and a friend. He was a husband, a father to adult children including a son who is also law enforcement, and a grandfather.
He was real, with real people who loved him.
