Today we celebrate the delayed freedom of the enslaved African Americans in Galveston and across Texas. Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, on June 19th of 1865, union workers informed the slaves that they had been declared free. Though this day is filled with joy and celebration, it is a reminder that the fight for total freedom and equity is still present. Happy Juneteenth!
