David Omenukor Foundation Steps Up Fight Against Colorectal Cancer
Participants at the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Workshop in Owerri have been advised to pay close attention to their diet due to its link to the rising incidence of colorectal cancer.
The advice was given by a Consultant Family Physician and one of Nigeria’s pioneering board-certified lifestyle medicine physicians, Dr. Ijeoma Dozie, during a lecture titled “Food as Medicine in Reducing Cancer Burden” at the March 2026 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Workshop themed “Blue Hat & Bow Tie,” held in Owerri, Imo State.

Dr. Dozie emphasized that, in addition to early and regular screenings, individuals should avoid processed foods, red meat, sugary foods, and refined grains. She also cautioned against excessive consumption of alcohol, saturated fats, and foods cooked at very high temperatures.
She recommended diets rich in fiber, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and other plant-based foods as key to reducing cancer risk.

Daily exercise and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle were also highlighted as important preventive measures.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Founder and CEO of the Foundation, Dr. Keyna Omenukor, stressed the urgent need for individuals to take proactive steps toward their health through early and regular screening. She noted that the workshop was designed to provide healthcare providers and the public with life-saving information, as well as a platform for discussion and exchange of ideas on critical strategies to combat colorectal cancer.

The workshop, organized by the David Omenukor Foundation in collaboration with the Nigerian Cancer Society and the Global Colon Cancer Association, attracted more than 150 participants from various walks of life.
The event also created opportunities for free colorectal cancer screening for attendees.
