During the relatively short period of history illustrated by this collection, the West was transformed from Indian territory unknown to most inhabitants of the eastern United States into a settle

Here’s a fun coincidence: This newly acquired work is being hung today—on International Picnic Day! The scrumptious painting by Severin Roesen is now on view in the 4th Floor Gallery.
While researching the new painting, AMWA’s staff learned that Roesen disappeared in 1872 with no trace. A little mystery and intrigue to chew on.

Last chance to get tickets to today’s Artful Insight on Helen Frankenthaler! Frankenthaler began exhibiting paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. While initially associated with abstract expressionism, her style was ever-changing throughout her sixty-year career. Her use of fluid shapes, lyrical gestures, and methods of fusing paint to canvas was highly influential to later generations of abstract painters. Frankenthaler used large formats to paint simplified or abstract compositions, but always with the goal of it looking spontaneous. She once said, "A really good picture looks as if it's happened at once."
