What is Latency? ⏳ (Commonly known as lag) If bandwidth is the width of a walking trail, latency is the rough terrain that slows you down. It’s the time delay it takes for data to travel from your device to its destination and back.
🔴 Laggy: Your data hits an overgrown path full of fallen logs and rocky detours causing frustrating freezes during video calls, streaming services, and more.
🟢 Smooth: A clear, well-maintained path. Your data moves in a straight, unobstructed line, keeping your online experience seamless and real-time.
Reducing latency is why the ICN prioritizes direct routes to major cloud networks. These strong public-private partnerships help us clear the digital path, minimize delays, and provide a faster, more reliable network for Iowa.

Big news in the tech world: Our training partner Fortinet just hit a massive milestone, training 1 million people in cybersecurity ahead of schedule! 🖥️✨
While that’s a global number, the impact is hitting close to home. Through our Statewide Youth Broadband Advisory Council (SYBAC), we're spreading cyber awareness across Iowa by giving high school students a free, foundational gateway into this exact curriculum. It sparks curiosity and introduces them to a vital tech landscape.
By empowering Iowa's 10th–12th graders with these tools, we are helping to cultivate the next generation of tech leaders and build a safer, more secure digital Iowa for everyone. 🛡️

Whether it’s a metro dispatch center or a rural site out in the field, we provide the secure fiber lines that keep public safety teams talking to each other. With connections stretching across all 99 Iowa counties, we’re proud to keep the communication moving when it matters most.
Because no matter where a call comes from, the lines need to stay open.

When our 2025–2026 SYBAC students analyzed how organizations defended against cyberattacks this past year, they quickly learned that no one fights a threat alone. They saw firsthand how vital teamwork and rapid reporting are to stopping bad actors in their tracks.
Although this year's SYBAC session has wrapped up, this concept remains crucial for our kids today. When a child is targeted online, predators actively try to isolate them. To counter this, kids need their own external "Incident Response" team ready to step in when things go sideways.
Parent Action Step: Build your child's Response Team. Help them identify two or three "Safe Adults" outside of your immediate family who both of you trust, like a well-known teacher, a close friend's parent, or a helpful neighbor. Have your child memorize these individuals' names and contact details so they know exactly who to call if they ever need an outside perspective or help reporting an online danger.

Ever wonder what bandwidth actually means? People often confuse bandwidth with internet speed, but if the internet is a highway, bandwidth isn't the speed limit. It's the number of lanes.
🛣️ Low Bandwidth: A one-lane country road. If a massive data file (like a huge video download) gets on it, everything behind it slows to a crawl.
⚡ High Bandwidth: A massive 10-lane superhighway. Hundreds of devices can travel side-by-side at maximum speed without causing a digital traffic jam.
That's why the ICN is constantly working to add more lanes to Iowa's digital highway. By continually upgrading our network, we ensure that schools, 911 centers, and hospitals always have the room they need to share critical data without ever hitting a traffic jam.
