We know food insecurity and housing instability are inextricably connected. Costs are rising across the board and in Polk County 42% of renters are cost burdened and spending more the 30% of their income on housing, and in Central Iowa 1 in 10 Iowans are food insecure. When housing is safe and stable it drastically improves everything else, from health to employment to food stability.

We are working every day to provide affordable homeownership opportunities, as well as providing free 1-on-1 Housing Counseling to help people be successful in their housing journey. People need support from trusted experts they can rely on to help them navigate spaces that they may never have been in contact with before. Education, financial literacy, knowledge around housing is crucial to the success of a family or individual. Education allows for families to gain and maintain housing stability.

For many Iowa families, the budget doesn’t break on the big things—it breaks on the basics. When rent takes too much of a paycheck, groceries become harder to afford, and nutritious food becomes a luxury. That’s where HOME, Inc. steps in.

Yesterday we held the first of our Annual Home Tour! We had a wonderful time showing three of our homes under construction including the first build of a brand new blueprint designed by Slingshot Architecture, and the first build of an Invest DSM plan we built in partnership in one of their Special Investment Districts! Guests enjoyed homemade appetizers and mocktails as they learned more about our property development and housing counseling programs while touring our homes. Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us! Til next year! 🎉

We are thrilled to be working with Invest DSM, Central Iowa Community Land Trust, Cutler Development, and Slingshot Architecture to try to bring affordable townhomes to the Drake Neighborhood!

This project would bring 20 affordable townhomes to the area, replacing what was once a nuisance property with new, owner-occupied, one-to-two bedroom townhomes with a garage for every unit. All of which would be made permanently affordable for all future homeowners through the Central Iowa Community Land Trust!
