While we celebrate 250 years of the founding of the United States, we must remain aware that the history of Indigenous people of the Americas goes back thousands of years. European exploration and colonization began in the late 15th century, and changed the landscape of the Americas' inhabitants with the arrivals of immigrants from other continents.

Al celebrar los 250 años de la fundación de los Estados Unidos, debemos tener presente que la historia de los pueblos indígenas de las Américas se remonta a miles de años atrás. La exploración y colonización europeas comenzaron a finales del siglo XV y transformaron el panorama demográfico de las Américas con la llegada de inmigrantes de otros continentes.

Last month, Iowa MMJ was honored to receive two awards from organizations we are proud to work alongside! The first came from the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa for the 2026 Partner Organization Award, and the second came from Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) for the Advocacy Leadership Award. We are so thankful to both of these organizations for the award and recognition, but we also want to take the time to thank all of our community members and allies who help us in the movement for immigrant rights here in Iowa.

Together we can, AND WE WILL, build an Iowa that is welcoming and inclusive to all!

Save the date! Our Annual Event is on Saturday, September 19th, here in Des Moines. There will be food from immigrant-owned restaurants/grocers, a silent auction with baskets donated by local businesses, and an informational activity.

Proceeds from Iowa MMJ’s annual event will be used to support critically needed, affordable immigration legal aid for victims of violence and for those applying for work authorization, citizenship, family reunification, green cards, and several other immigration legal services. ¡Reserven la fecha! Nuestro evento anual se llevará a cabo el sábado 19 de septiembre, aquí en Des Moines. Habrá comida de restaurantes y tiendas de comestibles propiedad de inmigrantes, una subasta silenciosa con canastas donadas por negocios locales y una actividad informativa.

Los fondos recaudados en el evento anual de Iowa MMJ se destinarán a apoyar la asistencia legal en materia de inmigración —asequible y de vital importancia— para víctimas de violencia, así como para quienes solicitan autorización de trabajo, ciudadanía, reunificación familiar, tarjetas de residencia permanente (Green Cards) y diversos otros servicios legales de inmigración.
