Adaptability is part of the job — and the 1st District's Residential Officer Staff Meeting was a great example of that in action.

With a flooring project underway at the WURF, the team moved the meeting outside and was greeted with perfect weather. The change of scenery made for a productive and refreshing gathering.

On June 10th, the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (ICIW) hosted a graduation ceremony honoring individuals who achieved significant educational and professional milestones. The ceremony celebrated women who successfully completed their High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), earned their Associate of Arts (AA) degrees, or finalized their formal registered apprenticeships.

Among the graduates, nine women completed comprehensive apprenticeship programs. An apprenticeship is a structured training system that combines paid on-the-job learning with related technical instruction, allowing individuals to master the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled trade.

Completing an apprenticeship during incarceration offers profound benefits for a person's future. It provides rigorous, industry-recognized credentials that are directly transferable to the workforce upon release. By mastering a specialized trade, participants gain a distinct competitive advantage in the job market, significantly reducing barriers to employment, fostering financial independence, and lowering recidivism rates.

Jennifer Seil, Statewide Apprenticeship Coordinator, shared her commendation for the graduates.

"I am incredibly proud of these women for their dedication to achieving this milestone, as completing a registered apprenticeship requires immense hard work and perseverance. Navigating the rigorous demands of this program is challenging under any circumstances, but doing so within a correctional setting demonstrates exceptional resilience and a true commitment to personal and professional growth."

🏅 Quad Cities Corporate Games 🏅

This weekend was packed with events! Even though Sunday’s rain got in the way, staff still showed up to represent and earned valuable participation points for the team.

📍 Track & Field – Saturday, 6/6/26
📍 Disc Golf – Sunday, 6/7/26

A HUGE thank you to Derek for volunteering and working the check-in desk. Carli and Jennifer also volunteered, which helped earn our team over 300 points.

Orlando and Juan absolutely crushed their events, bringing home gold medals left and right.

Carli and Jennifer held their own in the long jump and shot put, earning medals as well. Are we experts in those events? Absolutely not! 🤣 But we showed up, earned participation points for the team, and thanks to a smaller age division, we brought home some hardware too. We’ll take it!

Sunday was the Disc Golf event. I’m pretty sure we were on our way to bringing home a couple of gold medals, but Mother Nature had other plans. The rain and storms forced the event to be canceled while we were still on the first hole.

Next up: Trivia Night on Thursday!

Good luck to our Trivia Team!
