As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we honor the artists who captured Florida’s beauty and history. 🖼️✨

The Florida Highwaymen are 26 African-American artists who painted Florida’s breathtaking landscapes and sold their art along highways in the 1950s in the Ft. Pierce area. They sold over 200,000 canvases door to door and from car trunks, giving them economic independence during the Jim Crow era. Their bold colors and entrepreneurial spirit preserved the beauty of our state in canvas and became a symbol of resilience and creativity. Their legacy is Florida’s last great folk‐art movement and reminds us that every road tells a story.

🤔Ever wonder what it takes to build a retaining wall that can support a roadway for decades?

The process begins with a strong foundation. 🚧The large piles of select fill material pictured here are being transported and placed behind the new Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall next to the southbound Florida Turnpike as part of the S.R. 710/Beeline Highway Reconstruction Project.
Once compacted in layers, the select fill becomes a stable structure that helps support the roadway above.
