As we celebrate Juneteenth, itโ€™s important to understand the meaning behind the Juneteenth Flag and why it remains such a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and belonging.

Created by activist Ben Haith (โ€œBoston Benโ€) in 1997 and later revised in 2000, the Juneteenth Flag tells the story of a people who survived one of the greatest injustices in human history and continued to help build the United States of America.

The red, white, and blue colors are intentional. They remind us that enslaved Africans and their descendants were not outsiders to America - they were Americans. African Americans helped build this nation through their labor, innovation, military service, entrepreneurship, culture, and civic leadership. The colors affirm that Black history is American history.

The white star in the center represents Texas, the Lone Star State, where enslaved people in Galveston finally learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865 - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The star also symbolizes the freedom and contributions of African Americans across all 50 states.

The burst surrounding the star represents a new beginning. Like a nova exploding into the universe, it symbolizes the emergence of freedom and the ongoing pursuit of justice and opportunity.

The curved horizon reflects hope, possibility, and a future not yet fully realized - a reminder that every generation has a responsibility to move our nation closer to its ideals.

And the date, June 19, 1865, honors the day Union troops arrived in Galveston to enforce emancipation and announce that enslaved people in Texas were free.

While many people are familiar with the red, black, and green colors associated with Pan-African identity, the Juneteenth Flag reminds us of another truth: African Americans fought, sacrificed, organized, voted, served in the military, built communities, and demanded that America live up to its promise of liberty and justice for all.

Juneteenth is not only a celebration of freedom delayed - it is a celebration of perseverance, citizenship, and the unfinished work of democracy.

Today, we honor those who endured slavery, those who fought for freedom, and those who continue the struggle for a more perfect union.

Happy Juneteenth from the Tarrant County Democratic Party.

Today is a day about celebration, and it's also one about intentionality.

Please put in the comments your favorite Black artists, authors, content creators, restaurants, advocacy groups, and community events to help others find them. Let's help folks connect and support knowledge sharing. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

Hello from Opal's Walk For Freedom! ๐Ÿ‘‹

UPDATE: 10am is the new start time!! Weather cleared a bit.

Happy Juneteenth, Tarrant County!

On this day in 1865, General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War. It took 2.5 years for the proclamation to be enforced in Texas after it had been issued. Because Texas was the last state to have the proclamation enforced, this day not only marks the end of slavery in Texas, but in the United States. This is why it's also known as Freedom Day.

Thanks to Fort Worth's own Opal Lee (who has been a TCDP Precinct Chair for over 30 years!), this day became a federal holiday in 2021, under President Joe Biden.

We will have posts throughout the day today from her Walk For Freedom (please come join us! The walk starts at 10am: https://www.opalswalk2dc.com/), the history of the Juneteenth Flag, and how best you can celebrate this day. Stay tuned!

And in honor of this day, the TCDP offices will be closed. We'll resume normal hours on Monday, June 22.

This is unacceptable. Our jails have a substantially higher death rate than Harris, Dallas, or Travis Counties.

Why won't our County Judge or District Attorney investigate this jail?

Getting arrested in Tarrant County shouldn't be a death sentence.

๐ŸšจOur County Executive Committee (CEC) has adopted a resolution censuring Fort Worth ISDโ€™s TEA-appointed (unelected) Board of Managers, over the closure of International Newcomer Academy.

๐ŸŒŽThis campus served newcomer students, English learners, immigrant students, refugee students and families navigating a new country, a new language and a new school system.

When the FWISD Board of Managers would not stand for immigrant students-- our CEC, comprised of hundreds and hundreds of dedicated, volunteer neighborhood Precinct Chairs (record-setting)... did, in a way they could! We believe every child deserves a quality PUBLIC education, stability, belonging and support.๐ŸŽ“
