❤️💛💚 Today, the City of Gastonia recognizes Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, history, culture, and the continued pursuit of equality. It is also a reminder that American history belongs to all of us, even the chapters that ask us to pause, reflect, learn, and grow together.

And before anyone wonders, “Is this day for me too?” — the answer is yes. Freedom is not a limited resource. Honoring one community’s journey does not exclude another; it strengthens our shared understanding of who we are and how far we’ve come.

We encourage residents to take time today to learn, celebrate, support local Juneteenth events, and reflect on the meaning of freedom in our community and across our nation. Everyone is invited to today's celebration at the Rotary Pavilion that begins at 5 PM (full details in the comment section below).
