In this treatment summary, Catherine McHugh, PhD, BCBA-D, provides an overview of dietary interventions that are commonly suggested for treating symptoms of ASD and a brief discussion of the current state of the research for these diets. At this time, there is limited evidence to suggest that dietary interventions are effective for treating ASD symptoms. It is strongly recommended that any dietary intervention be closely monitored by a medical professional.

What do a balanced diet and quality research have in common? Both provide the foundation for better outcomes.
Just as nutritious food supports long-term health and well-being, evidence-based information helps individuals, families, and professionals make informed decisions about autism treatment.
At ASAT - Association for Science in Autism Treatment, we are committed to promoting scientifically supported approaches that empower people to make choices grounded in research—not guesswork. When it comes to autism intervention, reliable information matters.

Just because something is labeled “science-based” doesn’t make it so.
The term is often used as a marketing buzzword—especially by those promoting quick fixes, unsupported interventions, and untested treatments.
For families of children with autism, these claims can do more than create confusion; they can lead to false hope and difficult decisions. At ASAT, we believe “science-based” should represent evidence, integrity, and transparency—not a sales tactic.
Families deserve accurate information. The autism community deserves accountability. And together, we can promote practices grounded in credible scientific evidence.

Since Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s September 22, 2025 press conference discussing potential causes and treatments for autism, there has been increased public attention on Leucovorin as a possible intervention for improving communication skills in some autistic individuals. Reports have also noted a rise in prescriptions following this attention, highlighting the importance of careful, evidence-based guidance for families and clinicians.
In the latest installment of Is There Science Behind That?, we review the current scientific literature on Leucovorin. The article addresses key questions, including whether this treatment may be appropriate for all autistic individuals or only for those with specific underlying medical conditions.
Families, caregivers, and autistic individuals considering Leucovorin will find a balanced, research-based discussion of its potential benefits, limitations, and clinical considerations.
