This is an incredibly difficult time for the Huerta family, Odessa Fire Rescue, the City of Odessa family, and the entire Odessa community and beyond.

To provide the latest information and answer questions from the media and public, Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton and Odessa Mayor Cal Hendrick will hold a press conference today at 1:00 p.m. at the Central Fire Station. The briefing will be livestreamed on the City’s page.

In addition, we have created a special online condolence page where community members can share messages of support, memories, and condolences.

Hey look, it’s exactly what we told you was going to happen ten years ago. I’m shocked…

New data confirms what Houston firefighters experience every day: Call volume is climbing, resources are stretched and response times are suffering.

An IAFF analysis presented today to Houston City Council’s Public Safety Committee found:

• Fire calls have increased 34% since 2018
• EMS calls have increased 21%
• HFD engines met the national four-minute response standard just 29% of the time
• The department needs additional stations, engines, ladder trucks and ambulances to meet Houston’s growing demand

This report is a wake-up call for Houston. Access the full report at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w36Ei9dCjp8xuZlxD7BXpEWHfXoZyyUU/view?usp=sharing.

Shortly after 7:15 a.m. today, HFD units responded to a call at San Jacinto St. & Commerce St. for a woman standing on a pillar near Buffalo Bayou. When crews arrived, she jumped into the water.

HFD Rescue immediately put a boat in the water while units positioned themselves on scene and downstream. HFD Rescue deployed their drone to locate the woman in the current and guided the boat directly to her. She was pulled from the water and transported to Ben Taub Hospital in fair condition.

Huge shoutout to the crews whose quick work made this save possible: District Chief 08, Engine 09, Engine 17, Ambulance 17, Medic 17, Ambulance Supervisor 27, and Heavy Rescue 11.

⚠️ Buffalo Bayou and Houston's waterways can be extremely dangerous. Water levels and currents can change in an instant, especially with heavy rain. Please stay away from the water's edge and never enter a bayou or channel.
