EXTREME HEAT DANGER WARNING from ReadyHarris
What is the Danger?
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Harris County until 10 p.m. Saturday. A Heat Advisory is issued when heat index values of up to 108 degrees are expected to occur.
What you can do?
Residents can find cooling centers at various HCPL branches and other partner facilities throughout the county.
Exposure to these heat conditions can cause heat stroke, exhaustion, and even death. Heat-related illnesses are preventable.
1. Stay in air conditioning as much as possible. Shopping malls, libraries, and other public indoor spaces are great places to go to beat the heat when needed.
2. Wear light-colored, lightweight, and loose-fitting clothing.
3. If you must be outdoors, STAY HYDRATED and avoid heavy labor and other physical activities. Take frequent breaks.
4. NEVER leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures rise quickly and can reach deadly levels in minutes.
5. Check in with your neighbors, especially the elderly.
Common symptoms of heat-related sickness include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and loss of consciousness. Seek medical care or call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is suffering from a heat-related illness.

HOT CAR SAFETY
With temperatures climbing back up in our area, please do not leave kids or pets in an unattended vehicle.
Last year we had 31 fatalities in the U.S. due to children being left in vehicles.
Vehicles act as greenhouses; interior temperatures can spike dangerously within 10 minutes. Children’s bodies heat up 3 to 5 times faster than adults, making a hot vehicle quickly lethal.
No amount of time is acceptable to leave a child unattended in a car.
******************************************************************
With hurricane season underway, Captain Patrick Thudium shares important generator safety tips to help. Keep your family safe during power outages.
Remember:
- never operate a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces.
- keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows, and vents.
- install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms.
- allow generators to cool before refueling.
- follow the manufacturers operating instructions.
A little preparation can prevent a tragedy. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe this hurricane season.
