As part of the conference, Robert Hughes, Toby Kissam, and Kurt Dietrich will talk about the Lefferts Tide Mill. Over the centuries, there were numerous mills in the Town of Huntington on the north shore of Long Island, including four tide mills. This presentation will focus on the Lefferts Tide Mill, which is the last remaining mill in Huntington and which utilized the innovations of the third patent issued by the United States. The presentation will also address the challenges of maintaining a 240 year old earthen dam in the face of rising sea levels.

Enjoy the talks about the mills on Long Island Sound and see the Connecticut mills that are still standing as you venture from Fairfield Museum and History Center.

Under the roof, we have a mix of original 1794 rafters and non-historic ones; we replaced them with period-correct timbers. The restoration was completed with some of the money you donated! Thank you!

In 1798, the Van Wyck family sold a half-interest in the mill to the Lefferts brothers from Cold Spring Harbor, who operated the mill. By the middle of the 19th century, Jarvis Lefferts, a son of one of the brothers, became the sole owner and operator of the mill until he died in 1882.
