What movies or TV shows can you think of that were filmed in Irvine?

I’ll start with Poltergeist, which had portions filmed in Irvine in 1982.

What else have you got?

I loved celebrating my friend Yorba Linda Mayor Pro-Tem Peggy Huang for her installation as President of Chinese-American Elected Officials (CEO). And, what a special added treat it was to share time with so many other friends like Senator Ling Ling Chang, Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Chen, Councilmember Janice Lim, Councilmember Yvonne Yiu, the legendary Sophie Chao Wong and others who have contributed so much by way of community and public service!

Happy National Doughnut Day! 🍩

I’ve always wondered: how many doughnut holes does it take to equal one doughnut? Asking for a friend… and definitely not trying to justify eating extra doughnut holes.

If you’re still looking to celebrate, Donut Star (open 24 hours) and Mag’s Donuts in University Park, one of Irvine’s longest continuously operating businesses, are two local favorites worth checking out.

Over Memorial Day weekend, I had the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the California Community College Baseball Championship Finals at the Great Park.

This year's championship was particularly noteworthy, as it marked the first time the finals were not played on a community college campus.

As a former Planning Commissioner and City Councilmember, it was especially rewarding to see a venue that many of us spent years planning, advocating for, and building now host a statewide championship event of this caliber.

Congratulations to Santa Ana College on capturing its fifth state championship, and to all of the student athletes, coaches, families, and supporters who helped make the tournament a success.

We have a long history in Irvine of investing not only in community infrastructure, but also in our youth and young adults. Those investments create opportunities that benefit generations to come. ⚾

A couple weeks ago, I attended the annual meeting for the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, where I’m proud to serve on the Board of Trustees.

SCCCC is also home to Irvine Chinese School, the largest Chinese school of its kind on the West Coast. Long before the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center campus at Truman and Roosevelt was built, I was actually a student at Irvine Chinese School when classes were held at University High School.

It’s been incredible watching the organization grow over the years into an important cultural, educational, and community institution for families across Irvine and Orange County.

Today we remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

“Think not only upon their passing, remember the glory of their spirit.”

Words inscribed at Normandy that remind us to reflect not only on sacrifice, but on courage, service, and the enduring legacy of those who never came home.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.

Years ago, while serving as Vice Chair of the Orange County Fire Authority, I visited fire stations throughout Orange County. This photo was taken during a visit to Station 85 in Garden Grove with James Corden, then-Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones, and Councilman John O'Neill.

Today, Station 85 and other emergency personnel are actively responding to an industrial chemical leak and potential explosion threat in Garden Grove. While there is no threat to Irvine, please keep our friends in Garden Grove and the first responders working through this situation in your thoughts.

I'm grateful for leaders like Sheriff Barnes who speak plainly and directly, and act decisively to keep our communities safe:

My message to parents: the 4th Amendment does not apply to you. Get in your kids stuff. If your kid is alone in their bedroom, go look at what they do, go find out what’s on their phone, find out who they’re talking to, find out who their friends are, and more importantly make sure those people are actually their friends, because often times they are not.

If you’re a perpetrator of these crimes against children, let me be very clear: we’re going identify you, we’re going to locate you, we’re going to target you, we are going to find you, we are going to arrest you, and you will be held criminally accountable to the furthest extent of the law.
