ANIMAL CRUELTY/ ENDANGERMENT- GOLDEN VALLEY

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested David Leslie Cox, 76 of Hesperia, CA, for 22 counts of Cruelty to Animals and one count of felony Endangerment. On Saturday (6/20) at approximately 5pm, Deputies responded to the 5000 block of Highway 68 in Golden Valley for a welfare check that was reported as possible animal cruelty. The reporting party advised that a truck was parked in direct sunlight with multiple cages containing cats on the bed of the truck. The reporting party was worried for the animal’s welfare as the truck had been sitting in the hot sun for an extended amount of time.

Deputies arrived on scene and located the truck and made contact with the registered owner, identified as Cox. Deputies also observed the cages full of multiple cats and requested Animal Control Officers respond for an Animal Cruelty investigation. AC Officers arrived on scene and observed another cage of kittens inside the cab of the vehicle. AC Officers entered the vehicle and observed one of the kittens was deceased.

After spending a lengthy amount of time removing the cats from the cab, AC Officers observed a small aquarium-type habitat inside the truck. AC Officers asked the owner what was inside, to which the owner hesitantly informed them it was a baby Mojave Green rattlesnake. Upon further inspection of the vehicle, multiple buckets with live and dead rattlesnakes were located in the vehicle.

At the conclusion of the search of the vehicle, 5 rattlesnakes (3 dead and 2 live), and 16 cats (9 adult, 6 kittens, 1 deceased kitten) were removed from the truck. Endangerment charges are being pursued due to the lack of notification of the rattlesnakes prior to the AC Officer entering the vehicle. This investigation is ongoing.
