Emancipation Day: A celebration of Freedom

June 19th is Juneteenth, the oldest nationally recognized celebration commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Originally observed in Texas, Juneteenth festivities expanded to neighboring states and later throughout the country. Texas designated Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1979, and it was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
