Virginia leaders announced a newly negotiated agreement that would legalize regulated adult-use cannabis sales beginning July 1, 2027 following the governorโs veto of an earlier proposal.
The updated framework focuses on creating a safe, legal, and regulated marketplace while aiming to reduce reliance on the illicit market and expand opportunities for small businesses and farmers.
Key proposed changes include:
โ๏ธ Adult-use sales launch July 1, 2027
โ๏ธ Legal possession and purchase limit increases to 2 ounces
โ๏ธ Cannabis excise tax increases from 6% to 8% after two years of legal sales
โ๏ธ Public consumption would carry a $250 civil penalty (not criminal charges)
โ๏ธ Equity and economic access remain central to the conversation
Lawmakers also emphasized that communities disproportionately impacted by past cannabis enforcement should have meaningful access to opportunities created by legalization.
If approved through budget legislation this month, Virginia could move one step closer to building its adult-use market.
๐ญ Do you think Virginiaโs approach strikes the right balance between access, regulation, and equity?
