Imagine having the OPPORTUNITY to make LA City Hall work better, more democratic, more responsive, and more transparent and accountable?

Well, the status-quo, bureaucrats, and the LA political establishment are fighting hard against those Charter Reforms. And they are gaslighting the hell out of all of you.

While we support stronger oversight, withholding critical funding will cause significant harm to the very people LAHSA’s programs are intended to serve. The people most affected by this decision will not be those at LAHSA, they will be people experiencing homelessness who rely on LAHSA’s programs to survive. Any effort to improve oversight and accountability should be carried out in a way that does not jeopardize the wellbeing of vulnerable community members.

We urge the Mayor and City Council to empower the City Controller’s Office to provide the robust and independent oversight over homelessness spending that the people of LA expect and federal agencies demand.

It's unacceptable for the City Council to kill major reforms, including all 6 of our recommendations to strengthen transparency and accountability.

📣Show up tomorrow 1pm at LA City Hall to make your voice heard!

✉️Use our email toolkit to push for an independent budget for the City Controller: charterreform.lacontroller.app

Email your Councilmember!

STEP 1: Find out who your Councilmember is by entering your address into neighborhoodinfo.lacity.gov

STEP 2: Get your Councilmember’s email address at charterreform.lacontroller.app (scroll down a little)

STEP 3: Write & send your email:

The subject line can be anything with the words “Charter” and “Controller”.

Examples -

- Support an independent budget for the Controller in the Charter

- Charter Reform: Give the Controller an independent budget

In the email:

- Ask your Councilmember to support a Charter proposal that gives the Controller an independent budget of no less than 0.42% of the General Fund

- Say why it’s important to you (i.e., more accountability in City Hall)

More info at charterreform.lacontroller.app

💪THANK YOU ALL for sending emails! ✊

It takes just a few minutes but makes a BIG difference.

YOUR EMAIL could lead to the City Charter giving the Controller an independent budget (NOT decided by Mayor & Council, meaning the Controller is protected from political retaliation).

It could lead to more accountability in City Hall for decades.

IT'S WORKING ‼️ This is the POWER of COMMUNITY ORGANIZING and TRANSPARENCY 💪🏼

This property has units with walls and ceilings covered in mold.

Our Problem Rental Properties dashboard puts bad landlords on notice! See if your apartment building is on the list: prp.lacontroller.app

On top of our transparency tools, we conducted two audits on Affordable Housing and the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance. Our recommendations are helping the Housing Department improve enforcement of housing code violations to ensure that renters in LA live in safe and dignified housing.

"Everyone deserves safe, stable, and dignified housing."

Since we launched our citywide dashboard and map of the Top 100 Problem Rental Properties less than 2 weeks ago, our website has been viewed OVER 80,000 TIMES‼️ Many tenants are also coming forward, sharing their experiences and using our website to advocate for them and their neighbors to push the City for change.

🚨 TODAY, the LA City Council voted 12-1 to approve next fiscal year's budget which starts on July 1, 2027.

We'd like to thank & for trying to get us more auditors in the budget. Unfortunately, that motion was referred to be discussed later in Committee.

At a time when the City needs more transparency, accountability, and oversight, especially as our budget grows and the number of fraud, waste, and abuse claims increase, it's a shame only a few in City Hall value the work that we do to protect YOUR tax dollars. 🔎
