marks the day freedom reached those who had long been denied it β€” and reminds us how far we still must go.

At YWCA Greater Los Angeles, our commitment to eliminating racism is not symbolic β€” it’s constant, urgent, and actionable. Today, we honor Black liberation, confront injustice, and recommit to building a future rooted in equity and dignity for all.

🚨 Consent is not something that can be negotiated, pressured, or assumed.

No amount of:
❌ Extra time
❌ Alcohol
❌ Flirting
❌ Persistence

Changes the need for a clear and enthusiastic YES.

Join YWCA Greater Los Angeles in creating safer communities before, during, and after FIFA World Cup 2026.
Because prevention starts with all of us.

🚨 Quick reminder before your next game day:

❌ Consent is NOT a game.
❌ Control is NOT love.
❌ Silence is NOT yes.

βœ… Respect each other.
βœ… Trust your instincts.
βœ… Speak up.
βœ… Look out for your friends.

Safe Games. Stronger Communities. Brighter Futures.

⚽ Real MVPs respect boundaries.

Consent isn't complicated.
No means no.
Silence isn't yes.
Pressure isn't consent.

Whether you're at a game, a party, or hanging out with friends, everyone deserves safety, respect, and the freedom to make their own choices.

Respect starts with YOU.

🏟️ FIFA 2026 is here!

Let's make sure our communities are ready to celebrate & to protect.
Large sporting events can increase risks for sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking. Prevention starts with awareness, education, and action.

πŸ’¬ Start the conversation.
πŸ‘€ Know the warning signs.
🀝 Look out for one another.
πŸ“ž Share resources.

Together, we can create Safe Games, Stronger Communities, and Brighter Futures.

Los Angeles is hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026. Our job is to make sure everyone is welcome β€” and safe β€” in our wonderful city.

Large events draw massive crowds, creating conditions where exploitation goes unnoticed. We're not letting that happen.

That's why we're launching to promote safety, prevent exploitation, and make sure anyone who needs help has a place to turn.

Safety isn't a sideline issue. It's part of the game.

Follow along as we share how we're showing up this summer, and how you can make a difference.

✨ Participant Spotlight: Building confidence from home. ✨

One parent at our Supervisor Gloria Molina Empowerment Center had a dream: Learn English so she could confidently engage with her community and pursue a higher-paying job.

But in the current climate, public ESL classes didn't feel safe. We found another way.

Through our partnership with the Abram Friedman Occupational Center, she is now enrolled in online ESL classes she can take from the comfort and safety of her own home.

This is what we mean by empowerment: meeting people where they are, on their terms, and helping them rise.

How do you spell health? If you ask our seniors at Angeles Mesa Empowerment Center, they just might say B-I-N-G-O!

Members have kicked off a weekly bingo game, and it is more than just fun. Research shows that bingo offers real health benefits for older adults, including improved hand-eye coordination, sharper brain function, better mood, and overall mental and physical well-being.

The best part? Winners get to shop at our very own pop-up shop, stocked with new and gently used items donated by the seniors themselves. A little friendly competition, a little community spirit, and a whole lot of joy.

One year ago, we launched a program built on a simple belief: children thrive when their whole family is supported.

Our Family Engagement Program provides holistic, bilingual support to children ages 3-5, their parents, caregivers, and siblings, and now it's expanding to Angeles Mesa.

"Now that we're a year in, I feel so happy β€” it makes me emotional. Knowing the amazing work this team is doing and seeing the impact on families β€” that's why I want to come to work every day." β€” Nicole Cherry, LCSW, Clinical Manager

This is just one of the programs we're proud to provide that support women and their families. You can find others here: https://www.ywcagla.org/programs

Big news... πŸŽ‰

We're proud to announce that we've been selected as one of only seven YWCA associations nationwide to serve as a first-year Thought Partner in YWCA USA's Youth Leadership in Action Initiative, supported by a $100,000 grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc.

We will have a seat at the table in shaping a youth-led initiative that will reach more than 190 YWCA associations across the country. We're honored to bring the voices of the young people in Los Angeles to that national conversation.

"Youth thrive when they are given a voice to lead, create and help shape their future."
Barbara Harper, Senior Program Administrator

Thank you to Lilly Endowment for making this possible!
