Breathe SoCal promotes clean air and healthy lungs through education, advocacy, and technology.

Breathe Southern California has a long history of public health engagement aligned with its 100 year-old mission to improve air quality and lung health through education, research and advocacy. Formed in 1903 to address the epidemic of tuberculosis and other lung-related diseases, the organizationโ€™s education and outreach efforts have resulted in significant reductions in incidences of TB and more stringent smoking laws.

Smoke and airborne particles can travel miles from a fire and may affect air quality beyond the immediate area. For people with asthma, COPD, heart disease, children, older adults, and pregnant individuals, taking precautions is especially important.

To help protect yourself:
โœ” Stay indoors when possible
โœ” Keep windows and doors closed
โœ” Run a HEPA air purifier if available
โœ” Wear a well-fitting mask outdoors if needed
โœ” Keep medications and inhalers nearby
โœ” Monitor local air quality conditions

Have you noticed smoke, haze, or changes in air quality where you live? Let us know in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Today, we honor Juneteenth by recognizing Black leaders whose work has helped shape healthier, more equitable communities.

From advancing environmental justice to expanding access to healthcare and advocating for healthier living conditions, pioneers like Hazel M. Johnson, Dr. Robert Bullard, Dr. Beverly Wright, and Dr. Louis W. Sullivan have left a lasting impact on public health and environmental equity.

Their leadership reminds us that everyone deserves the opportunity to live, work, and thrive in healthy environments.

At Breathe Southern California, we remain committed to supporting cleaner air, healthier lungs, and stronger communities for all.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we reflect on the progress made, honor those who helped lead the way, and recognize the work that continues toward a healthier and more equitable future.

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿซ Summer is here, and so is the perfect reminder to take care of your lungs.

Hot temperatures, wildfire smoke, and poor air quality can make it harder to breathe especially for children, older adults, and those with asthma or other lung conditions.

This season:
๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Check your local Air Quality Index (AQI)
โ˜€๏ธ Limit outdoor activity when air quality is poor
๐Ÿซ Make your lung health a priority

A little prevention can go a long way toward helping you breathe easier all summer long.

Save this reminder and share it with someone who could use it. ๐Ÿ’™
