Since its inception in 1992, the Korean American Democratic Committee (KADC) has worked to mobilize the Korean American communities in Southern California to vote and to participate in the local, state and federal electoral process. Since its formation in 1992, KADC's purpose has been to:
• Advocate for the political empowerment of the Korean American community;
• Engage the Korean American commun

We celebrate today, Juneteenth, to mark the day when enslaved people in Texas were finally notified of their freedom from slavery in 1965, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1963.
We also are reminded that the fight for freedom and independence continues domestically and abroad.

KADC lends its voice among the many to call out racial bias and disparities in our country’s justice and legal systems.
The case that is generating national attention and outrage is because the 35 years imposed on Karmelo Anthony for first degree murder is concerning in comparison to a similar self defense case — Caysen Allison, a white defendant who received 10 years for criminally negligent homicide.
It’s unconscionable that prosecutors in Karmelo’s case struck out every Black juror to be part of the final panel. What happened to a “jury of your peers” — a fundamental legal right?
For KADC, it is important that we call out injustice wherever we see it. In MLK Jr’s words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

It is not lost on us that the injustice felt by the family of Cyrus Carmack-Belton with the not guilty verdict of Chikei Rick Chow was similarly felt by the family of Latasha Harlins 35 years ago when Soon Ja Du was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and given only five years of probation.
KADC will continue to fight for a justice system that is fairer and equitable to all, not to those whose proximity to power is closest.
We still have a lot more to go and do to get the justice system we deserve.
KADC extends our deepest sympathies to Cyrus’ family and will continue to do our part to meaningfully center and rectify what happened to Latasha 35 years ago.
